3 Simple Tips to Keep Your Smoke Detectors in Good Shape

3 Simple Tips to Keep Your Smoke Detectors in Good Shape

Due to its ability to detect the early signs of a fire, the smoke detector is one of the most valuable fire safety tools you can install in your home. Unfortunately, this piece of equipment is so common that a lot of homeowners neglect to take care of it.

It’s easy to think that the smoke detector is designed to work all the time. In reality, however, it gets damaged just like any other appliance. Thankfully, there are several things you can do to ensure that your smoke detectors are always in a ready-to-use condition.

To make it easier on your part, here are three simple ways to keep your systems in good shape:

1.  Replace Old Smoke Detectors

Most fire detectors have a lifespan of about 10 years, so if your units are that old, change them immediately. Even if they’re still functional, it’s smarter to replace them to avoid problems in the future. Purchasing new equipment isn’t cheap but your safety is worth it.2

2. Have Your Smoke Detectors Regularly Cleaned

Dust, dirt, and other airborne contaminants can accumulate in the smoke detector and block its sensors. Filthy systems have a harder time detecting smoke, so it’s in your best interest to clean all the alarms in your home.

Use your vacuum cleaner and its wand attachment to remove any filth that’s surrounding the unit. You can also clean the detector’s interior components, but remember to consult the manufacturer’s instructions when doing so. For effective results, it’s recommended to clean your smoke detectors at least twice a year.

3. Test Your Smoke Detectors Monthly

Testing your smoke alarm is fairly easy because many models are built with a “test” button. However, if you want to make sure that your units are can detect actual smoke, you can do the following:

  • Light a candle and then blow it out.
  • Immediately place the candle below the unit to allow the trail of smoke to drift inside the alarm.
  • If the smoke detector works, its alarm should go off. If it doesn’t, replace it ASAP.

Taking care of your smoke detectors won’t take much of your time, and it’s a relatively easy thing to do. Applying these tips on a regular basis will also give you a higher survivability rate if ever a fire starts in your home.

However, you can’t always rely on simple maintenance methods to inspect the condition of your smoke detectors. In most cases, you’ll need to call your local fire damage restoration company for help.
